Almost everyone at some time in his or her life thinks about suicide. It does not discriminate. Suicide crosses all age and socioeconomic classes.

People having a crisis often perceive their dilemma as inescapable and feel an utter loss of control. Fortunately, there are some common warning signs which, when identified and acted upon, can save your life or the life of someone you know.

If someone you know…

  • Threatens suicide
  • Talks about wanting to die
  • Shows changes in behavior, appearance, mood
  • Abuse drugs, alcohol
  • Deliberately injures themselves
  • Overall significant behaviour change

You can help by…

  • Staying calm, listen
  • Let them talk about their feelings
  • Be accepting; do not judge
  • Ask directly about suicidal thoughts/plans
  • Take threats seriously
  • Tell someone
  • Call 911 if that person is at imminent risk.
